5. Part of DJPAD2020 S/W
5.1 Virtual Turntable Window

(Fig. 4) Dual Virtual Turntable Window

  • Dual Virtual Turn Tables
DJPAD2020 S/W has the powerful MP3, CD and wave file play engine, and this engine can play two songs at the same time - Track A and Track B. There is a cloud moving animation in the lens-shaped circle during the play of song and this window gives you the information about the tracks like the track No., the name, the real time, BPM of the playing song, master/monitor route, and the basic operating buttons - play&pause, stop, forward/backward jump, next song play, previous song play. etc.
  • Playing Buttons
If you click the "Backward/Forward Jump" buttons, the playing point will jump to forward or backward with 5sec time difference. Regarding the "Go Previous/Next Song" buttons, if you click these button, the playing point will move instantly to the start point point of the song or move to the start point of the next song. And "Play/Pause" button will play or pause the playing song, also using "Space Bar" in your keyboard, you can play and pause the active turntable. You can see the name of the playing buttons below figure.

(Fig. 5) Playing Buttons

As you see, when the background of the turntable is highlighted, that turntable is active. Then, the volume of this virtual turntable is under the control of slider in DJPAD2020 H/W. If you choose the both turntables at the same time(See Chapter 4.5), the knob in the Cross-Fader will be highlighted automatically, then you can control the Cross-Fader by the slider in DJPAD2020 H/W.

  • Master & Monitor
If you click "Master" on the virtual turntable, you will see it will change to "Monitor". "Master" means the song of that track will go to the stage through Master Out and "Monitor" means the song of that track will be monitored into the headphone through Monitor Out. As we described before, if you have the 3D sound card, you can use this monitor function. In the chapter 6.6 Mixer, it will be explained more.
  • Pitch Controller
At the both sides of the each virtual turntable, there are pitch adjustment sliders. Pitch adjustment means the change of the playing speed. So users can switch smoothly from one song to another without a seam or break of rhythm. If you choose this slider in S/W, the knob of the slider will be highlighted. Then, Pitch Controller is under control of the slider in DJPAD2020 H/W. You can control the pitch of song from 50% to 150%. If you save BPM of the song(See Chapter 6.1 Play List - BPM Calculator), it will change the pitch by BPM and you will see the change of the BPM on the virtual turntable. In this case, you can save BPM of songs from 2 turntables and synchronize 2 songs by the pitch control of the each song. In the analog system, DJs make pitch adjustment by their feeling. But in DJPAD2020, there is a powerful BPM calculator so that users can save the BPM data of the songs and make a precise pitch adjustment easily.
  • Manual Cross-Fader
The virtual turntable window contains the virtual mixer between the 2 virtual turntables. Users must confirm the backgrounds of the both virtual turntables highlight, before they use Manual Cross-Fader function.

To get the dual co-active virtual turntables (backgrounds of 2 virtual turn tables are highlighted), you can put the Forward/Backward button until you get the both turntables' backgrounds are highlighted (See Chapter 4.5 Forward/Backward Button). If the both backgrounds are highlighted, user can change the value of cross-fade slider easily using the slider of the H/W. You can also change the Cross-Fader in S/W using the mouse dragging. But, it will be more convenient and faster to use the slider in the H/W.

The Manual Cross-Fader is used to mix two songs from each track manually. It can make the volume change of the two songs according to the user-editable volume profile curve. If you click the profile selection button above the volume profile curve in Cross-Fader area, you will see the change of this volume profile curve. There are several different types of volume profiles in the program, and we, SoundGraph, have a plan to provide the special volume profiles using the S/W upgrade for free. So, users can choose the one which they prefer for the Cross-Fader effect.

DJPAD2020 S/W can control the volume of two digital audio tracks separately or simultaneously. In the separate mode(just one of the backgrounds is highlighted), the volume slider of the highlighted turntable is activated independently from the Cross -Fader. But in the simultaneous mode (the both backgrounds are highlighted), the Cross-Fader slider controls each track volume at the same time according to the volume profile curve.

(Fig. 6) Cross-Fader

  • Auto Cross-Fader
Auto Cross-Fader can control the volumes of the songs from one track to another automatically and relatively according to the user-editable volume profile curve. This Auto Cross-Fader is a very useful function especially when users play the songs continuously without stopping for long time.

In the Cross-Fader area, there is a button "AUTO". If you click the this button(Please be sure that you have to push this button when just one song is played from one track), the new button "FADE GO" will appear just under "AUTO" and "Manual" buttons. Also, you will see "FADE TIME'" and preset time(10sec) along the slider below the volume profile curve. Now this slider is to change the Auto Cross-Fading time.

For example, if you push the "AUTO" button while one song is played, now you just set Auto Cross-Fader function. If the set time is 10 sec, exactly 10sec before the playing song ends, Auto Cross-Fader is in active. So you will see little cursor just under the volume profile curve will move from track A to track B (or from B to A). So, for 10 sec, the playing song will be ended completely and the other song from another track will fully start according to the volume profile curve. You can choose the several different types of volume profile curve by clicking cross-fade volume profile selection button according to your preference. Also you can change the Auto Cross-Fading time from 0 to 20 sec.

The order of the playing songs in this mode will be like No.1 song of track A -> No.1 song of track B -> No.2 song track A -> No.2 song of track B..., until the last song of one track. Of course the playing order will be reverse if you start from track B. If you click on Loop List button, it will loop the songs in the list between A and B track. In this mode, playing will be continued until you cancel the Loop function or Auto Cross-Fade mode. (See "Loop List" in Chapter 6.1)

(Fig. 7) Fade Go Button in the Auto Cross-Fade Mode

The buttons that user can use during the activation of Auto Cross-Fader are the buttons at the top of the program (SOUNDGRAPH, HELP, MINIMIZE, CLOSE), <Fade Go> button (Fig. 7) and volume profile selection button (Fig. 6). If you click the <Fade Go> button under the Auto Cross-Fade mode, then the playing song of the virtual turntable will be cross-faded compulsory to another turntable right away according to the pre-set Auto Cross-Fading time. Program will start under Manual Cross-Fade mode always even though you close the program under Auto Cross-Fade mode. But program usually memorizes all the settings of your latest work like loaded songs, Effect Pad setting, Drum Loop setting, EQ/Reverb setting and etc. and the program will start later with the same settings except the Auto Cross-Fade mode.

Auto Cross-Fader is usually used when a user is away for long time or when it is necessary to play many songs continuously and automatically according to the play list with the fixed cross-fading time. Therefore, it is limited for user to use all the functions under Auto Cross-Fade mode. For example, the stop or the play button is not available under this mode. If a user wants to use other buttons under Auto Cross-Fade mode, the user should change the mode to the Manual Cross-Fade by clicking "Manual" button.

  • Remix Record
And this virtual turntable window contains the re-mix recording part also. Users can record and produce their own re-mix songs as wave file in real time. So, if you want record your mixing and scratching(including effect pad, drum loop and etc.), click the red button for the record, and when the recording is finished, click the stop button and click the save button and type the name for the saved wave file. Users can encode the MP3 file with this recorded wave file in order to make download and transfer easily on the web by using the appropriate program like Cool Edit.
